Italian Judo legend Ezio Gamba, who famously won a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, has stepped down from his role as the technical coordinator of the Russian national judo teams. In recent years, and certainly at the 2024 Paris Olympics, lots of matches were won on penalties. If you can't throw a player, you force them to incur three shidos, and they will get hansoku-make. This is a legitimate way to win but it's not the ideal way. In judo, we want to see people win using techniques. We don't really want to see people win on penalties. So, how do you reduce "shido play?" Answer: You make shido play less rewarding.
